Does the thought of going to the dentist make you come out in a cold sweat?
Would you rather endure the pain of a toothache than to get your teeth checked at the dentist?
You’re not alone in your fears. There are plenty of people who have a phobia of the dentist, and prefer not to go whether they need treatment or not. Dental sedation could help.

An Introduction From Natalie Ohlson-Turner
Since 2014 Natalie has worked in the Oral Surgery Department of multiple different hospitals, and predominantly works as a Specialty Doctor in Oral Surgery for Warrington and Halton Hospital Trust, with her area of interest being Oral Surgery and Sedation. In 2021 she joined the team at Dental House and has provided both sedation and oral services for the practice since then.
She loves working with anxious patients both in practice and hospital settings, and providing sedation allows her to carry out treatment in the patients with dental anxiety or dental phobia. She has independently provided sedation for her patients since June 2015 and in 2020 she completed her Postgraduate Diploma in Conscious Sedation in Dentistry at Newcastle.

WE’RE HERE TO HELP
We have a team of very caring staff here at The Dental House, many of whom have a special interest in treating anxious patients. We realise however, that this may not always be enough.
For extremely anxious patients, the answer could be sedation. Sedation dentistry can help to take away some of the anxiety that you might be feeling towards the dentist.
WHAT IS SEDATION?
Dental sedation is used to help combat the fear that a lot of people have over visiting the dentist. It can be used with the more invasive procedures like fillings and even simple procedures like teeth cleaning.
The type of sedation we use at The Dental House is intravenous sedation. Intravenous sedation is used to enable nervous patients to receive dental treatment by reducing anxiety levels using medication.
The sedative is given by injection into a vein (intravenous) usually in your arm or the back of your hand. The sedative is administered slowly (titrated) until you feel relaxed enough to have your treatment. The medication used has a temporary amnesic effect, meaning that you may forget the treatment that you have received or being in the practice at all.
You will be monitored throughout your appointment and kept in the practice until you have recovered from the sedation.
WHO CAN HAVE SEDATION AT THE DENTIST?
There can be plenty of different reasons people seek out sedation at the dentist, these can include phobias of dental procedures, to deal with pain during urgent dental care, bad experiences at the dentist previously, resistance to local anesthetic, or a general anxiety disorder. Your dentist will always talk through the options available to you, as well as discussing your medical history to ensure sedation is right for you.’
