Sugar Stop At Lister Junior School

Sugar Stop at Lister Junior School

Stuart warns students against too much sugar.

Sugar is hiding in popular soft drinks- in large amounts! As an advocate for Liverpool’s recent campaign to crack down on sugar intake, Stuart contacted a local junior school offering to come in. He wanted to deliver the message more directly to some of Old Swan’s younger residents. The school was delighted with this offer. As one of the teachers advised The Dental House, “I think this will be of real value to our children. Some of them consume a risky amount of sugar without even realising it.”

The pupils of Lister Junior School were a credit to their teachers and families. They showed interest and enthusiasm and a willingness to start to take responsibility of their own sugar consumption despite being only 8 and 9 years old. Stuart spoke to the children and guided them through practical activities. The children were shown some photographs of how tooth decay can look in children and were advised about the consequences of this issue. They found out more about caring for their teeth and asked plenty of questions which kept Stuart on his toes! They loved dressing up with dental gloves and masks.

Sugar Lesson

Sugar lesson!

Stuart was really impressed with the levels of maturity shown by the students. It seems he enjoyed the classroom experience even more than he had anticipated! “It was lovely to be welcomed into a local school and meet some of the great staff and pupils. The Dental House would like to say a big ‘Thank You’ to Lister Junior School and we hope to have inspired some dentists in the making…”

Sugar consumption, particularly with regard to soft drinks, was a news focus on Granada Reports earlier this year. Stuart was interviewed and appeared on ITV. This is a topic he is passionate about and will continue to promote prevention in his dentistry.
